Unlikely Friendship

Stretching her wings, Ruby poked her head out from her family's nest. Her mother had still not returned from collecting food yet. Bored, she and her seven other brothers and sisters chirped out strings of melodies, bouncing rythyms back and forth with their father. Her youngest sister, Rose sang out a sharp, clear E major scale. Her father sang back an E minor scale.

Ruby sang a B flat major, but her father didn't respond. There was a rustling in the forest, and a flash of red fur. A fox appeared underneath the tree they were in. Her father glowered at the animal. It was young, small. Probably the same age as Ruby. It looked up at the nest curiously. Ruby sang her scale again, and the fox looked even more curious.

Her father pushed her to the floor of the nest along with her siblings. He glared at the kit again, and it scampered away. Her father turned back to the hatchlings and sang a few reassuring notes, and they calmed down. But Ruby was curious, she wanted to know about the fox.

She got an oppurtunity to see the fox again when it came near her tree while her mother and father were hunting worms. Her siblings had chosen to learn to fly with them, but Ruby had chosen to stay. Hoping for the fox to show up, she perched on the edge of her nest.

The fox appeared again and clumsily climbed up the tree and next to Ruby's nest. It gently touched the nest with its paw. "Hello," Ruby said.

"Hello," The fox replied.

"What's your name?" Ruby asked

"Tigereye. What's yours?"

"Ruby."

From that day on, the two became best friends, and found places to play in. They played hide and seek and tag in clearings most of the time. One day, whilst they were playing tag, Tigereye lost Ruby in the woods. But they had a code for when one person lost the other and were worried during games of tag or hide and seek or they gave up.

"Unlikely friendship," Tigereye called.
