Day 16 - Memory

Memories are the building blocks of people's lives, it's what makes up their experience, knowledge, their identity. They are one of, if not the most, important thing to an individual in our world.

But not in this one.

In my world, memories are unreliable, even your own. In their world, you can't guarantee that they're even yours. This world is Amnosyne, where government owns and rules all, including the contents of your brain. It is not a new planet, or an alternate universe, simply Earth 250 millions years later, when all the continents have once again united to form Pangea, simply going by another name now. It is a rather apt title, merging the word "amnesia" and the name of the Greek godess of memory together, representing the thing that government valued their control over the most.

Common people like myself cannot trust what we remember, causing memory to lose value in the middle and lower hierarchies of society, but among the rulers, it is the mortar holding together their rule. In year 250001929, higher-ups of the world had decided that there was only one way to hold ultimate control over the citizens of the new Earth, and forced neuroscientists to slave away in laboratories for years on end until they managed to produce a drug containing nanocomputer technology that could manipulate people's memories using a well-trained, self learning AI system that was mass injected into the population via "vaccines." Any citizen who does not show up for vaccination one year after being told to is killed then wiped from those around them's minds.

Every month, the United Government of Amnosyne meets to review any memories the AI software in charge marked as "threatening." Exactly what the criteria for this category is, nobody knows. Even I don't know. Yes, I have an understanding of everything that goes on in this world, despite being a nobody. I pieced it all together this last month.

I feel like this isn't the first time I discovered this, though.
